Model Grid

The Columbia River ELCIRC application uses an unstructured grid composed of triangular and quadrilateral cells. Use of an unstructured grid allows more refinement to be placed in shallower waters, and elements can be aligned for better depiction of the navigation channels in the Columbia River. The modeling grid extends from California to Vancouver Island, as shown in the figure below. The extent of this domain allows propagation of the Columbia River freshwater plume without significant ocean boundary interactions.
