--The U.S. Navy is committed to outfitting the bridges on all of its ships with electronic chart systems over the next four to five years. The United States maintains the best Naval force in the world and continues to have an ongoing requirement to maintain sea power. The U.S. military purchases more than 40% of the nautical charts produced by NOAA. Charts and geodetic data are necessary for both submarine and surface navigation training and exercises conducted by the Navy.
In addition, U.S. ports handle a substantial volume of military cargo. During Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, the most intensive buildup of American forces in history, U.S. ports handled two-thirds of all the military cargo. The Navy continues to require up-to-date, accurate and complete charts to support it's operations and those of it's cargo carriers. Many U.S. ports have continuously changing sandy, silty bottoms, requiring new, updated surveys and charts. Numerous obstructions on the sea floor also need to be investigated and charted accurately.
NOAA has a mission through the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) to apply state-of-the-art methods of precise positioning and advanced geodetic, photogrammetric, and remote sensing techniques to establish and maintain a consistent national coordinate system and to support mapping, charting, navigation, boundary determination, and property delineation. This reference system is critical to national defense, requirements for training, and military preparedness missions within the United States.
NOAA's mission includes supporting these critical national defense requirements. New technologies can provide the U.S. military with the information they need--even in real time.
