NOAA hosted its second annual Precision Marine Navigation stakeholder and partner workshop on September 30 and October 1. The workshop provided a progress update on the program, demonstrated a new prototype dissemination system and surface forecast data, as well as hosted discussion sessions with partners and users across the navigation community. Thank you to all who participated in this year's workshop and contributed to its success. Nearly 250 people attended from all over the world.
Recordings of the presentations and slide decks are provide below for each of the talks. For more detailed information on the feedback sessions see the Workshop Report.
NOAA Precision Marine Navigation Annual Workshop
Opening Session - 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
The opening session introduced the Precision Marine Navigation (PMN) Program and provided updates on the progress made over the past year. The PMN team demonstrated the prototype data processing and dissemination system, discussed upcoming program milestones, the customer engagement strategy, and included lightning talks from NOAA data providers and a panel discussion organized by the Canadian Hydrographic Service to share how they are working towards similar goals.
Stakeholder Session: Software Systems and Distributors- 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This stakeholder session focused on obtaining feedback from the companies that are ingesting NOAA’s marine navigation data for incorporation into their navigation products. NOAA Small Business Innovation and Research grant recipient, Edward Weaver of GeoNavtech, kicked off the session with a short presentation. Much of this session was spent in facilitated discussion, and the major points can be found in the workshop report and in the illustrated notes.
Stakeholder Session: End Users- 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
This stakeholder session focused on obtaining feedback from the end users of NOAA data such as pilots, port authorities, and others. The session was kicked off with a presentation from Julia Powell providing an introduction to S-100. This presentation was requested by pilots at last year’s workshop. Much of this session was spent in facilitated discussion, and the major points can be found in the workshop report and in the illustrated notes.
Stakeholder Session: Federal Partnerships- 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
This stakeholder session focused the other U.S. federal agencies working on similar initiatives to NOAA’s program and the areas for opportunity and collaboration. The session began with talks from the U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Much of this session was spent in facilitated discussion, and the major points can be found in the workshop report and in the illustrated notes.
Report out and Future Directions - 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
The final session of the workshop closed out the event with reflections on the main outcomes from each session. This included a report out from the graphic illustrator who shared the illustrated notes he took throughout the workshop. After the report out, this session included two final presentations, one from the OPC on the S41x standards and one from CO-OPS on the future of real time data. These talks highlighted marine navigation data and services that NOAA is developing for inclusion in the Precision Marine Navigation program further into the future.
August 13-14, 2019 NOAA’s Precision Marine Navigation program hosted its first stakeholder workshop at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping University of New Hampshire Joint Hydrographic Center. The purpose of this workshop was to provide information on the Precision Navigation program to industry users from PPU, ECDIS, and UKC companies and obtain feedback from these companies regarding their technical requirements to ingest NOAA data services.
