Coast Survey recently announced plans to change the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) maintained channel depth values on
, which include paper nautical charts and the corresponding digital raster navigational charts (NOAA RNC®). Minimum depths (also called controlling depths) are collected during periodic USACE sonar surveys of channels. In the past, these depths were provided on raster charts, but controlling depths will now be replaced with the original channel design dredging depths used by the USACE (called project depths). Standardizing depth presentation on these products will improve data consistency and overall safety. Implementation begins in early 2019. For more information on these changes, please visit our

Michelle Harmon (NCCOS), Lonnie Gonsalves (NCCOS),
Nicole Le Boeuf (acting NOS assistant administrator),
Kathleen Jamison (chief of Coast Survey's Resource
Management Staff), and Terence Lynch.
Congratulations to
Terence Lynch from Coast Survey's Resource Management Staff who received one of the U.S. Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) presented last week at the 2019 BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C. Terence was one of six NOAA recipients of the BEYA Modern-Day Technology Leader Award, which recognizes efforts in strengthening the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce pipeline and a commitment to driving the science endeavors of their respective organizations. Terence's recognition is attributed to his work with NOAA's Diversity Professional Advancement Working Group (DPAWG) with fostering relationships and creating potential opportunities at NOAA and USDA for minority students from historically black colleges and universities in STEM related fields, and also his work serving as co-lead of the DPAWG's Advancement Team.
