Coast Survey's 3D sandbox a major attraction at the 2017 NOAA Open House
The 3D sandbox attracts kids of all ages. Miss Medley
(almost 2) and Ben Friedman, acting NOAA administrator,
take a turn shaping contours and building mountains in the sand.
Coast Survey's 3D sandbox was front and center when you entered the science center for the NOAA Open House this past Saturday. Coast Survey volunteers
Lorraine Robidoux,
Patrick Keown,
Rachel Medley, and
Meredith Payne guided visitors through the process of creating mountains and making lakes in the sand while explaining the connection to our multibeam sonar technology. A few yards away,
Pearce and
Veronica Hunt,
Dawn Forsythe,
Kristen Crossett, and
Kathleen Jamison explained how the old printing press works. In total, 1,500 people visited the open house, and for many, it was their first time.
Navigation managers annual meeting held in Silver Spring, Maryland
Rachel Medley, Bart Buesseler, Tom Loeper, Jeff Ferguson,
Kyle Ward, LT Ryan Wartick, Meghan McGovern, Steve
Soher, Crescent Moegling, Alan Bun, and Andy Kampia.
The Coast Survey navigation managers traveled to Silver Spring this past week to have their annual meeting. Highlights on the agenda included discussions with Dr. Russell Callender, RDML Smith and Katie Ries, the Policy and Constituent Affairs Division, and the Office of Legislative Affairs. The nav managers were very pleased to hear about new initiatives coming from all the Coast Survey divisions and are looking forward to testing and messaging for Coast Survey. Of particular interest were the National Charting Plan, CATZOC attribution of USACE surveys, and the hydro health model. Thank you to all Coast Survey personnel who contributed their time and effort into making the 2017 navigation manager meeting a success.
Coast Survey's weekly chart update service is live - Has your chart been updated?
Weekly chart update webpage. One glance will tell you if the
chart in your area has been updated.
Coast Survey is making a fundamental change in how we inform users about chart updates. Users now have the ability to visually identify where all changes are occurring on their charts each week. With that information, users can make their own determination about when they may want to purchase an updated paper chart or download an updated raster or electronic navigational chart. The new
weekly chart updates webpage provides users with weekly information about specific changes in water depths, shoreline, obstructions, or other features on NOAA’s nautical charts. Job well done to
Mark Griffin,
Erick DiFiore,
Kurt Nelson,
Marc Higgins for developing the service. To learn more about the project and basic instructions on how to use the service, check out our
blog post.
Staff Updates
Erica Towle is joining Coast Survey staff following her 2016 NOAA Sea Grant Knauss Fellowship. Erica served on the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, Majority Staff. Prior to her Knauss fellowship, Erica earned a PhD in marine biology from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School. Erica will be working with Rachel Medley on legislative engagement and Kathleen Jamison on RMS budget formulation and strategic planning.
Jim Burkitt recently joined Hydrographic Surveys Division's Atlantic Hydrographic Branch as an ERT contractor. Jim most recently worked for at the Research Cooperation University of Hawaii and previously as a survey tech on the NOAA Ships Ron Brown, Reuben Lasker, and Henry Bigelow. He has a BA from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and a MS in Biology from Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey.
Rear Admiral Smith presents Curt Loy with the Jefferson Cup,
a traditional Coast Survey retirement gift.
Thank you to those that attended
Curt Loy's retirement party last Friday. Among his many accomplishments, Curt served as Coast Survey’s chief geographer, had the foresight and drive to establish NOAA’s Historical Map and Chart Collection, pioneered availability of not-for-navigation versions of the chart products, and served as our resource and business manager. Curt Loy leaves a substantial legacy that will continue to serve the NOAA mission well into the future.
Summer Internship Program at Coast Survey
This summer Coast Survey is partnering with the National Park Service and the 3rd party non-profit Greening Youth Foundation for a 10 week Marine Geography Summer Internship Program linking college students and recent graduates with internship positions in science, technology, engineering, and math across the country.
The program is part of a new pilot diversity internship program designed to provide meaningful and relevant science based internships to individuals from underrepresented groups, which will introduce program participants to careers within NOAA and Coast Survey while increasing diversity in the NOAA workplace.
Coast Survey has four open positions in HSD, MCD and NSD and interns will be located in headquarters in Silver Spring, MD and in Fernandina Beach, Florida, on NRT 2. The program runs from June 5 - August 4 with a workshop and Career Week from August 6 - 10 where NOAA will combine with the NPS program and students will present their projects and talk to OPM about recruitment and placement within Federal Agencies.
The weeks in between, the interns will be paid via a third party to work full time, and housing will be arranged for and covered by them as well. The advertisement is currently open on the Greening Youth Foundation's career website until February 27.
Below are the links for the Coast Survey position postings found on the Greening Youth Foundation recruiting site:
