Coast Survey launches new NOAA Nautical Chart Catalog
New NOAA Nautical Chart Catalog.
Marine Chart Division recently released the new
NOAA Nautical Chart Catalog. The new catalog allows users to search for any of NOAA’s 1,000+ nautical charts. The redesign also allows users to find and download RNCs, full-sized nautical charts, BookletCharts™, notice to mariners chart corrections, a list of chart agents, and the ability to view online images of raster (paper) charts. A quick search of the entire chart suite is available on the main page if the user knows the chart number, title or scale. The new catalog is responsive and mobile friendly. Successful Ocean Discovery Day attracts 3000 visitors
Dr. Kelley talks about bathymetry, weather, and ocean
modeling with a group of middle school and high school
students and teachers.
The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC) sponsored and hosted the
UNH Ocean Discovery Day on October 13 and 14. Nearly 3000 visitors toured the Center and took part in presentations and hands-on activities related to ocean mapping and ocean science. October 13 was student day, with about 1,300 students in grades 3 through 12 visiting the Center, and October 14 was the public open house. Coast Survey's
Dr. John Kelley,
Dr. Juliet Kinney, and
Lt. Hadley Owen were among the many CCOM/JHC volunteers at the event. Additional photos are located on
New Hampshire Sea Grant's Flickr site. For more information, contact

NOAA chairs inaugural meeting of International Hydrographic Organization Council
IHO delegation at IHO Council meeting in Monaco.
Rear Admiral Shep Smith,
attended the first annual meeting
of the newly established International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Council as the council chair. The council
discussed its role and goals within the IHO, reviewed the strategic plan and items
requested by the IHO Assembly, and discussed its annual work program and budget.
Established in November 2016, the council is composed of 30 leading
hydrographic nations from the IHO membership and functions much like a
corporate board of directors, overseeing performance management and the
business side of the IHO. For more information, contact
Jonathan.Justi@noaa.gov.

Awards
Brian Calder (right) receives UNH's Innovator of the Year
award from Brent Loy (left).
Congratulations to
Brian Calder for receiving the University of New Hampshire's (UNH) Innovator of the Year Award for his investment in government, academic,
and industry partnerships, technical expertise to create solutions for timely problems, and passion to create sustainable models that support access to and implementation of his tools by
all members of the community. Brian joined UNH in 2000 as a research scientist in CCOM/JHC. Brian is currently a research associate professor in ocean engineering and the associate director of CCOM.
Congratulations to
Kathleen Jamison (chief, Resource Management Staff) who was selected as a 2017 NOS EEO and Diversity Award recipient for exceptional leadership, vision, and dedication to a diverse workforce through outreach and internship opportunities. The effort Ms. Jamison has made in the last two years towards providing opportunities to current students and recent grads from diverse backgrounds is remarkable and unparalleled in its effectiveness in Coast Survey. A particularly noteworthy example is her spearheading of the innovative internship program with the Greening Youth Foundation, a new source of diverse participants.
Congratulations to
Amanda Phelps (Resource Management Staff) who was selected as a 2017 NOS Team Member of the Year for her successful management of Coast Survey’s pilot diversity internship program. Amanda assumed leadership of this new program, Internships in Marine Geography, in January 2017, overseeing the development of intern projects with Coast Survey managers, coordinating the selection of summer interns into the program, serving as the onsite manager for the interns for 10 weeks during the summer, and acting as the liaison to the third party non-profit organization, Greening Youth Foundation, which co-administered the pilot program.
Congratulations to
Giuseppe Masetti (UNH/Joint Hydrographic Center) who was selected as a 2017 NOS Team Member of the Year for developing HydrOffice software and its impact toward increasing confidence and improving timeliness of seafloor map products, including nautical charts, for the ocean mapping community. Dr. Masetti established several HydrOffice projects in direct collaboration with NOAA's Office of Coast Survey including two important tools: Sound Speed Manager and QC Tools. HydrOffice (www.hydroffice.org) is a research software framework that allows mappers and hydrographers around the world to support and collaborate on improvements to data acquisition, processing, and products through automation, quality control, and calibration for more precise, accurate, and fast measurements of the seafloor.
Congratulations to
Jason Greenlaw (Coast Survey Development Lab) who was selected as a 2017 NOS Team Member of the Year for the development and enhancement of NOAA’s nowCOAST using exceptional knowledge, experience, and ingenuity, and sharing this within NOAA to ensure the reliable delivery of NOAA geospatial products. Jason is the lead software developer of NOAA’s nowCOAST utility and has consistently demonstrates exceptional initiative and creativity in finding solutions to customer-driven requirements and has consistently developed innovative strategies for improving nowCOAST’s content, functionality, and reliability.
Congratulations to
Emily Clark (Acquisition and Grants Office) who was nominated by Coast Survey for the NOS Peer Recognition Rafting Award for unparalleled support, expert guidance, and collaborative work approach on priority contract initiatives for the Office of Coast Survey in 2017. Ms. Clark manages Coast Survey’s portfolio of commercial acquisition procurements, consistently providing a high level of customer service and ensuring timely execution of Coast Survey’s unique contracting requirements.
In Memoriam
Chris Marcum.
Long time shipmate, colleague, friend, and employee of all NOAA hydrographic platforms at some time or another,
Chris Marcum, passed on October 14, 2017. In almost 10 years with NOAA, he served on the NOAA Ships
Fairweather,
Rainier, and
Thomas Jefferson, most recently, as a deckhand, seaman surveyor, and coxswain. Chris taught many of us how to do a CTD cast, drive a survey launch, and how to enjoy the finer things about life at sea. Prior to his time with NOAA, Chris served in the U.S. Coast Guard. His love for the Ohio State Buckeyes was great and he made sure all knew about the O-H-I-O (especially if you were a Michigan fan). He left this the world too soon at the young age of 37 years old and will be missed by his family, friends, shipmates, and colleagues. Chris always knew how to bring joy and laughter to the crew and make all feel welcome and part of the team. Fair winds and following seas, friend.
Today we simply say:
“Shipmate... the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those you have trained, guided, and led. Shipmate you stand relieved. We have the watch..."
