It turns out that the data acquired by sound (sonar) can be translated into some truly beautiful graphics. Check out this gorgeous digital terrain model created by Ian Colvert, a physical science technician with Coast Survey\u2019s <a title=\"Navigation Response Teams\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/nrt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navigation Response Team 6<\/a>. Colvert produced the image file by processing data acquired with the team\u2019s <a title=\"multibeam echo sounder\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/hsd\/multibeam.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multibeam<\/a> sonar during a recent hydrographic survey project.<br \/>\nThe digital terrain model depicts the wreck of the freighter\u00a0<i>Fernstream<\/i>, a 416-foot motor cargo vessel that sank after a collision near the entrance of the San Francisco Bay in 1952. NRT6 surveyed\u00a0<i>Fernstream<\/i>\u00a0as part of a recent study \u2013 identifying potential polluting shipwrecks \u2013 conducted by the <a title=\"Office of National Marine Sanctuaries\" href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of National Maritime Sanctuaries<\/a> and the <a title=\"Office of Response and Restoration\" href=\"http:\/\/response.restoration.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Response and Restoration<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\nThis project helps agencies prioritize threats to coastal resources. It also adds to our ability to assess the historical and cultural significance of shipwrecks.
