Eric Younkin<\/em><br \/>\nFor four weeks in February, NOAA\u2019s Office of Coast Survey offers formal hydrographic training to newly hired survey technicians and physical scientists, using the beautiful campus at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/tcyorktown\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States Coast Guard Training Center<\/a> in Yorktown, Virginia. This year, dozens of NOAA employees and others took the extensive training, covering everything from acoustics and statistics to the processing of hydrographic survey data within the CARIS software package.<br \/>\nTwo dozen people attended in person. They came from a wide range of duty assignments: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moc.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NOAA ships<\/a> <em>Rainier, Fairweather, Thomas Jefferson, Pisces, <\/em>and<em> Oscar Dyson; <\/em>Coast Survey\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/bayhydro.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">R\/V <em>Bay Hydro II<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/nrt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navigation Response Team 1<\/a>, and the Atlantic Hydrographic Branch; NOAA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngdc.noaa.gov\/ngdc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Geospatial Data Center<\/a>; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commerce.wa.gov\/Programs\/Energy\/Office\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington State Energy Office<\/a>. In addition, we had \u201cvirtual\u201d attendance from the NOAA ships as well as from the <a href=\"http:\/\/olympiccoast.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/iocm.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping Center<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commerce.wa.gov\/Programs\/Energy\/Office\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington State Energy Office<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/d17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States Coast Guard District 17<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_158913\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-158913\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/hydrotraining-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-158913\" src=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/hydrotraining-2015.jpg?w=660\" alt=\"NOAA hydro class at USCG Training Center\" width=\"660\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-158913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA Hydrographic Training course at U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, Feb. 27, 2015. The training facility and the surrounding roads and schools closed \u2013 but we still held classes, even though some of the commuting students had to join the ranks of the remote attendees.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_158915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-158915\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/posmv-demonstration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-158915\" src=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/posmv-demonstration.jpg\" alt=\"POS MV demo\" width=\"277\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-158915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Training class participants enjoy a mobile demonstration of the POS MV.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nFirst on the agenda, attendees received on-the-job training on board <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/bayhydro.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">R\/V <em>Bay Hydro II<\/em><\/a>, thanks to the officer-in-charge, Lt.j.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/category\/bay-hydro-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bart Buesseler<\/a>, and physical scientist technician <a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/category\/bay-hydro-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Mowery<\/a>. Students also set up a horizontal control base station, performed leveling runs, simulated shoreline feature acquisition and calibrated\u00a0an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.applanix.com\/products\/marine\/pos-mv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Applanix POS MV<\/a> system. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/staff\/news\/2013\/shepard.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capt. Shep Smith<\/a>, Lt. Cmdr. Olivia Hauser, Lt. Cmdr. Michael Gonsalves, physical scientist <a href=\"http:\/\/ccom.unh.edu\/user\/grice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glen Rice<\/a>, and others offered their expertise on a variety of topics, including statistics and the organizational structure of Coast Survey.<br \/>\nStudents learned about field operations and sonar theory, with classes offered by Lt. Megan Guberski from the NOAA Ship <em>Thomas Jefferson, <\/em>physical scientist Matt Wilson from Coast Survey\u2019s Atlantic Hydrographic Branch, and physical scientist Mashkoor Malik from Coast Survey\u2019s Hydrographic Systems and Technology Programs. Lt.j.g. Matthew Forrest from NOAA Ship <em>Rainier<\/em>, and Keith Brkich and David Wolcott from NOAA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services<\/a> covered vertical control and tidal theory.<br \/>\nWe also appreciated the participation from CARIS\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caris.com\/news\/story.cfm?id=91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Mode<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Tami_Beduhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tami Beduhn<\/a>, as they explained the CARIS processing workflow.<br \/>\nTo cap off the training, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/staff\/glang.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rear Admiral Gerd Glang<\/a>, director of Coast Survey, talked about the future of hydrography and \u2013 importantly \u2013 awarded training completion certificates to the students.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_158917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-158917\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/danielle-power-and-rdml-glang-hydro-training.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-158917\" src=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/danielle-power-and-rdml-glang-hydro-training.jpg?w=660\" alt=\"RDML Gerd Glang awarded training completion certificates.
