{"id":168544,"date":"2016-03-29T09:15:38","date_gmt":"2016-03-29T13:15:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/?p=168544"},"modified":"2022-07-01T15:42:31","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T15:42:31","slug":"u-s-coast-pilot-goes-interactive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/u-s-coast-pilot-goes-interactive\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Coast Pilot goes interactive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coast Survey published its earliest version of the <em>United States Coast Pilot<\/em> in 1858, as Appendix No. 44 in <a href=\"https:\/\/library.oarcloud.noaa.gov\/docs.lib\/htdocs\/rescue\/cgs\/001_pdf\/CSC-0007.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coast Survey&#8217;s Annual Report<\/a>. The publication, organized into nine regional volumes, provides navigational information that can\u2019t fit on nautical charts.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/publications\/coast-pilot\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Coast Pilot<\/a><\/em> has gone through many iterations over the last 158 years. In the last century, we\u2019ve added more information and added color to the historically black and white copy. More recently, we began posting book files on the web for easy download. We have now taken the next major step, enabled by interactive digital technology, to give boaters an enhanced and more accessible product. <em>(Please note, the improved version is not mobile-friendly. You should use a tablet or larger\u00a0screen.)<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakthroughs in digital editing and publishing have allowed us to produce the <em>U.S. Coast Pilot<\/em> in a digital format called extensible markup language (XML). People won\u2019t notice a difference from the original format \u2014 it looks the same as the paper copy \u2014 but the online version has some neat interactive features. To find them, go to the <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/publications\/coast-pilot\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Coast Pilot<\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, select\u00a0your volume, and then click on a\u00a0chapter in the left hand HTML column.<\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new version of the <em>U.S. Coast Pilot<\/em> is formatted for reading on the web. Certain place names and objects, highlighted in green, are now directly view-able on a nautical chart and linked to entries in the official <a href=\"http:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/domestic\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Geographic Names database<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other features include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">images that embiggen when clicked;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an interactive table of contents for each book; and<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raster nautical chart links (highlighted in light blue) that can be viewed with each section in the book.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168566\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168566\" style=\"width: 1058px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-168566\" src=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/cp_blog1.jpg\" alt=\"cp_blog1\" width=\"1058\" height=\"582\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This screen grab of Coast Pilot&#8217;s HTML version shows the links to nautical charts, geotags to place names, and links to federal regulations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coast Survey updates the <em>Coast Pilot<\/em> weekly, and now readers can see where we made changes. The system automatically highlights changes (in gray), and retains those highlights until the next annual version is published. (The print-on-demand paper copy contains all updates made up to the time of printing.)
