{"id":169883,"date":"2017-06-20T09:32:45","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T13:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/?p=169883"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:37:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:37:29","slug":"surveying-rescue-drills-and-an-open-house-noaa-ship-rainier-has-been-busy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/surveying-rescue-drills-and-an-open-house-noaa-ship-rainier-has-been-busy\/","title":{"rendered":"Surveying, rescue drills, and an open house\u2014NOAA Ship Rainier has been busy!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>by ENS Michelle Levano<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omao.noaa.gov\/learn\/marine-operations\/ships\/rainier\">NOAA Ship <em>Rainier <\/em><\/a>continues hydrographic survey operations in Chiniak Bay, near&nbsp;Kodiak, Alaska. As of June 1, 2017, <em>Rainier <\/em>and her survey launches have surveyed 2,025 nautical miles in the Spruce Island, Long Island, Middle Bay, Kalsin Bay, Isthmus Bay, and offshore Cape Chiniak areas. The total distance surveyed is about as long as the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rainier <\/em>took advantage of its proximity to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/d17\/airstakodiak\/\">U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Kodiak<\/a> and performed two days of helicopter evacuation drills, while simultaneously conducting survey operations.<br>The drills were performed with the USCG&#8217;s MH-60T Jayhawk and a MH-65 Dolphin helicopters. Each helicopter practiced dropping and lifting a rescue basket, or litter, onto\u00a0<em>Rainier<\/em>\u2019s bow.\u00a0Upon arrival, the MH-60T Jayhawk lowered a rescue swimmer aboard who held a safety briefing, and then demonstrated how to maneuver the tether and basket to the deck. Crew members rotated through to manage the tether and retrieve the basket. These drills provided the Coast Guard and <em>Rainier<\/em>\u2019s crew with a valuable opportunity to practice rescue techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/close-helicopter-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169890\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">NOAA Ship Rainier and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak performed rescue drills off the bow of the ship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Additionally, <em>Rainier <\/em>held a two-day open house as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodiakchamber.org\/wwwkodiakchamberorgcrabfestival\">Kodiak Chamber of Commerce\u2019s yearly Memorial Day Crab Festival<\/a> celebration. The ship was alongside in downtown Kodiak offering public tours, with over 300 individuals attending. This was a great opportunity for the public to see what the large white vessel in Chiniak Bay has been doing.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/levano-vip-tour.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169887\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">ENS Levano provided a tour for members from the local Kodiak community.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As the season pushes on, so does the ship. <em>Rainier <\/em>has plans to open more survey areas around Cape Chiniak and William\u2019s Reef area.
