{"id":170344,"date":"2017-09-12T15:57:32","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T19:57:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/?p=170344"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:54:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:54:04","slug":"noaa-helps-ports-recover-in-georgia-and-florida-following-hurricane-irma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/noaa-helps-ports-recover-in-georgia-and-florida-following-hurricane-irma\/","title":{"rendered":"NOAA helps ports recover in Georgia and Florida following Hurricane Irma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/2017\/09\/01\/noaa-helps-ports-recover-from-hurricane-harvey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurricane Harvey response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was wrapping up for some of NOAA Coast Survey\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/nrt.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">navigation response teams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(NRT), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/2017\/09\/06\/noaa-positions-personnel-and-survey-assets-in-preparation-for-hurricane-irma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personnel and survey assets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were positioned in preparation for the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the NRTs, this meant traveling hundreds of miles with a survey vessel in tow, facing challenges such as locating fueling stations, finding available lodging, and finding opportunities to rest. For the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/nrb.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobile integrated survey team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MIST), which is available to travel anywhere in the U.S. when hydrographic survey assistance is needed by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), this meant finding transportation to a disaster area and a \u00a0\u201cvessel of opportunity\u201d to survey from once there. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurricane response efforts and logistics are closely coordinated by Coast Survey\u2019s Navigation Services and Hydrographic Surveys divisions which include\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/reps.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regionally located navigation managers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NRTs, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/hsd\/surveyplatforms.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey ships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This combination of expertise ensures that we are often the first ones on the water after a hurricane, making sure there is no hidden debris or shoaling that pose a danger to navigation. Once our teams notify the USCG of our findings, the quicker ports can re-open and resume shipping, and homeland security or defense operations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mid-Atlantic Navigation Manager Ryan Wartick, located in Norfolk, VA, is working with the USACE Savannah District on tasking for NOAA Ship <em>Thomas Jefferson<\/em> and NRT 2.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NOAA Ship <em>Thomas Jefferson<\/em> is transiting from Norfolk, VA, to the Savannah\/Brunswick area and is expected to arrive Thursday evening, September 14. They intend to survey portions of the port of Savannah and once complete, will travel to Brunswick.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NRT 2 (homeported in Fernandina Beach, FL, with James Kirkpatrick, Lucas Blass, and Alex Ligon &#8211; augmenting from NRT 1) is transiting to Brunswick, GA, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/hazards\/drc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NOAA Disaster Response Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Mobile, AL, following Hurricane Harvey survey response. The team will begin surveying the waters around Brunswick including the East River and Jekyll Island Range inward on Wednesday, September 13.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Savannah and Brunswick update 9\/13\/17: NRT 2 is standing by as surveying in Brunswick was completed by USACE.<\/strong><br><b>Miami, Florida<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southeast Navigation Manager Kyle Ward is positioned in Miami and coordinating operations\u00a0<\/span>and response efforts with USCG District 7.<br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MIST (operated by Michael Annis, Lt. Cmdr. Jonathan French &#8211; augmenting from NRT 1, and\u00a0John Doroba &#8211; augmenting from the Coast Survey Development Lab) traveled from the NOAA Disaster Response Center in Mobile, AL, via U.S. Coast Guard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/hq\/CG9\/lrs\/features.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASA HC-144A Ocean Sentry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to Miami on Monday, September 11. This was the first flight into Miami post storm. The data provided by the MIST to the USCG Captain of the Port aided in the decision to re-open the port to cruise ships (with draft restrictions). The team is now surveying in Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tampa update 9\/13\/17: NRT 5 continues to survey in Tampa in coordination with USACE.
