We use the Coast Survey spotlight&nbsp;blog series as a way to periodically share the experiences of Coast Survey employees as they discuss their work, background, and advice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brian Martinez, Lead Cartographer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Knowing that the products we provide to the mariner community is essential to safe navigation for commerce gives me a sense of accomplishment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-170998\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/06\/brianmartinez_photo-e1529435936223.jpg\" alt=\"Brian Martinez stands in front of the NOAA Headquarters building\" class=\"wp-image-170998\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brian Martinez in front of the NOAA Headquarters building in Silver Spring, Maryland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is your job title and how long have you worked for NOAA Coast Survey?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a lead cartographer and I have worked at Coast Survey for 14 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a day in your job like?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>I update and maintain nautical charts (<a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/charts\/noaa-raster-charts.html\">raster<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/charts\/noaa-enc.html\">electronic navigational charts<\/a>) in the Mid-Atlantic region. Various tasks include reviewing compiled sources of data, performing quality control, and pre-evaluating a variety of source data types before they are applied to the nautical charts. As a team lead, I provide daily guidance and technical advice to fellow cartographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What drew you to this work?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>I loved maps and computers growing up. In college, I really enjoyed all of the cartography classes that I took. I had a mentor that encouraged me to find a job in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What aspects of your job are most rewarding to you?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing that the products we provide to the mariner community is essential to safe navigation for commerce gives me a sense of accomplishment. Also, helping my fellow cartographers on a daily basis is very rewarding to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What advice would you give someone looking to pursue a career in your field?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Do what you think is best for you. Throughout college I was often criticized by choosing a major that people thought had smaller chances of landing a successful job\/career. I got a lot of skeptical questions like: \u201cWhat are you going to do after school?\u201d or \u201cWhat kind of a job can you really get with a geography degree?\u201d Stick to your gut and find something that you will enjoy for a long time.
