These charts provide a nearly twenty-fold increase in scale over the previous ENC coverage. New Etolin Strait hydrographic surveys and the resulting ENCs served as a pilot project for the overall rescheming of the entire NOAA ENC suite with a regular, gridded layout for ENC charts, as outlined in NOAA\u2019s<a style=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/publications\/docs\/national-charting-plan.pdf\"> National Charting Plan<\/a>. No corresponding<a style=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/charts\/noaa-raster-charts.html\"> NOAA raster nautical chart products<\/a> in Etolin Strait will be produced. This is in keeping with Coast Survey\u2019s \u201cENC-only\u201d production concept, which generally maintains the current raster chart product coverage, but only creates new larger scale coverage in the ENC product line.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cLast summer, I heard stakeholder groups request better charts for Western Alaska. Etolin Strait is a refuge from the often harsh Bering Sea and a transfer point for community resupply in this area,\u201d said Rear Adm. This area was charted at a 1:1.5 million general scale, making it difficult for deep draft vessels to safely navigate among relative shoal areas. In June 2016, the <em>Champion Ebony<\/em>, a 600-foot chemical tanker, ran aground on an uncharted shoal just days before NOAA commenced planned survey operations. Coast Survey\u2019s hydrographic contractor, Terrasond, surveyed Etolin Strait in August 2016 covering approximately 570 square nautical miles of seafloor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"802\" height=\"706\" src=\"https:\/\/alb.nauticalchartsblog.ocs-aws-prod.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hydro_Surveys.png\" alt=\"Survey work coverage in Etolin Strait.\" class=\"wp-image-171744\"\/><figcaption>Survey work in 2016 provided additional detail that was applied to the new ENCs.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 13 new ENCs, produced at a more detailed 1:80,000 scale, include this newly collected hydrographic data. The new ENCs provide depths in meters with whole-meter contours at 5m, 10m, 20m, and 30m. The ENC outline also fits the multi-cell grid layout that will define the boundaries of all future reschemed ENCs. <strong>Updates to the Etolin Strait ENCs will not be made to the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/charts\/noaa-raster-charts.html\"><strong>NOAA raster nautical chart products<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>in keeping with the \u201c ENC-only\u201d production concept outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/publications\/docs\/national-charting-plan.pdf\">National Charting Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"428\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/alb.nauticalchartsblog.ocs-aws-prod.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ENC_Cells.png\" alt=\"The outlines of the thirteen new large scale (1:80,000) ENCs.\" class=\"wp-image-171743\"\/><figcaption>The outlines of the thirteen new large scale (1:80,000) ENCs of Etolin Strait available from NOAA\u2019s Chart Locator. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Coast Survey is currently rescheming a portion of New York Harbor and anticipates releasing new ENCs of this area by the end of 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOAA recently released 13 new large-scale electronic navigational charts (NOAA ENC\u00ae) of Etolin Strait, Alaska.
