The new service uses symbols, labels, and color schemes familiar to those who have used NOAA paper nautical charts or the <a href=\"https:\/\/devgis.charttools.noaa.gov\/pod\">NOAA Custom Chart<\/a> application. NCDS is available as Esri REST Map Service, OGC Web Map Service (WMS), and MBTiles formats.<\/p>\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/NCDS_Traditional_Symbology.png\" alt=\"This is a graphic showing an electronic navigational chart depicting the entrance to the Columbia River and Astoria, Oregon. This <a href=\"https:\/\/noaa.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/webmap\/viewer.html?webmap=b59731d1a3cf49f4b2918edb043d4a9e\">preview of the viewer<\/a> \u2013 available on the Coast Survey website soon \u2013 will give you an idea of what the NCDS rendered data looks like.<\/p>\n<p>The NCDS replaces the Raster Navigational Chart (RNC) Tile Service and the Seamless RNC Service. These services are being shut down on March 15 as part of NOAA\u2019s continuing transition away from traditional paper and raster nautical charts in order to focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/charts\/rescheming-and-improving-electronic-navigational-charts.html\">improving and modernizing ENC coverage<\/a>. Production of all traditional paper and raster charts will end by January 2025, as described on Coast Survey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/charts\/farewell-to-traditional-nautical-charts.html\">Farewell to Traditional Nautical Charts<\/a> web page.<\/p>\n<p>The new chart display service joins the existing ECDIS Display Service that uses symbology specified by the <a href=\"https:\/\/iho.int\/\">International Hydrographic Organization<\/a> (IHO) for the display of ENC data on Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) that large ocean-going vessels and many smaller commercial ships use for navigation. This symbol set is commonly referred to by its IHO specification number, \u201cS-52,\u201d or as \u201cECDIS symbology.\u201d This service is available in Esri REST Map Service and OGC Web Map Service (WMS) formats.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/NCDS_IHO_Symbology.png\" alt=\"This is a graphic showing an electronic navigational chart depicting the entrance to the Columbia River and Astoria, Oregon. Note that the links do not open viewers that can display the ENC data directly. The links provide access to the rendered ENC data that software and web map developers can use in their applications to display the data.<\/p>\n<p>Coast Survey is interested in knowing how developers are implementing the new NOAA Chart Display Service in online and offline applications, and what users think about the way the ENC data is being portrayed.
