{"id":183892,"date":"2023-05-23T12:55:44","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T12:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/?p=183892"},"modified":"2023-05-23T12:55:44","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T12:55:44","slug":"noaa-represented-at-the-international-hydrographic-organization-assembly-in-monaco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/noaa-represented-at-the-international-hydrographic-organization-assembly-in-monaco\/","title":{"rendered":"NOAA represented at the International Hydrographic Organization Assembly in Monaco"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early May, NOAA\u2019s Office of Coast Survey Deputy Hydrographer John Nyberg, Ph.D., was elected as a director of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) during its <a href=\"https:\/\/iho.int\/en\/3rd-session-of-the-assembly-2023\">Third Assembly<\/a>. The six-year term begins in September and promises to be a critical time for the evolution of digital navigation infrastructure and capacity worldwide, with the implementation of the S-100 hydrographic model. John was nominated by the secretaries of commerce, defense, and state. His role will be to serve as part of the directing committee which is composed of a Secretary General and two directors to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization in order to advance the goals of the Member States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are honored that John was elected to serve in this capacity,\u201d said Nicole LeBoeuf, director of NOAA\u2019s National Ocean Service. \u201cFor years he has led efforts to modernize access to nautical charts and ensured our stakeholders are well informed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IHOAssemblyTwo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183897\" width=\"672\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IHOAssemblyTwo-1.jpg 512w, https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IHOAssemblyTwo-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">John Nyberg leads a proposal to investigate alternative, non-dues methods for raising capacity building funds to address the important global maritime issues facing the hydrographic community worldwide.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IHO is an intergovernmental organization that works to ensure all the world&#8217;s seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted. Every three years, 98 member states are invited to convene at their Assembly to make decisions on proposed initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a tremendous accomplishment for John and reflects the esteem in which the United States and NOAA are held in the international hydrographic community,\u201d said Rear Adm. Benjamin K. Evans, director of NOAA\u2019s Office of Coast Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to electing a new director and re-electing the Secretary General, the Assembly tackled other topics, many of which are NOAA priorities. Benjamin Evans display the signed memorandum of understanding.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff also showcased a selection of more than 1,000 datasets on NOAA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.noaa.gov\/\">Science on a Sphere\u00ae<\/a> for audiences to visualize and appreciate a variety of earth science topics, including the role of hydrography in sustainable development.
