{"id":997,"date":"2013-06-03T13:50:03","date_gmt":"2013-06-03T17:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com\/?p=997"},"modified":"2013-06-03T13:50:03","modified_gmt":"2013-06-03T17:50:03","slug":"noaa-mynauticalcharts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/updates\/noaa-mynauticalcharts\/","title":{"rendered":"NOAA\u2019s latest mobile app provides free nautical charts for recreational boating"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">UPDATE: the beta testing period for MyNOAACharts has ended<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<h3><i>Public is invited to try beta version of MyNOAACharts<\/i><\/h3>\n<p>As recreational boaters gear up for a summer of fun on coastal waters and the Great Lakes, NOAA is testing <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=noaa.csm&amp;feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyNOAACharts<\/a>, a new mobile application that allows users to download <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/staff\/chartspubs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NOAA nautical charts<\/a> and editions of the <a title=\"United States Coast Pilot\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/nsd\/cpdownload.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>U.S. Coast Pilot<\/em><\/a>. The app, which is only designed for Android tablets for the testing period, was just released.<br \/>\nMyNOAAChart, which can be used on land and on the water, lets users find their positions on a NOAA nautical chart. They can zoom in any specific location with a touch of the finger, or zoom out for the big picture to plan their day of sailing. The <em>Coast Pilot<\/em> has geo-tagged some of the major references and provides links to appropriate federal regulations.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1002\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1002\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/mynoaacharts2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1002     \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 6px;\" src=\"http:\/\/noaacoastsurvey.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/mynoaacharts2.jpg?w=1000\" alt=\"MyNOAACharts on tablet\" width=\"420\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>MyNOAACharts, a mobile app beta test for Android tablets, can easily integrate the user&#8217;s location, the nautical chart, and all the navigational information from the U.S. Coast Pilot.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nEasy and workable access to nautical charts is important for boating safety, says <a title=\"Rear Admiral Gerd Glang\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/staff\/glang.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rear Admiral Gerd Glang<\/a>, director of NOAA Office of Coast Survey. He recalls a funny, but poignant, reference to charts.<br \/>\n\u201cA popular t-shirt has a \u2018definition\u2019 of a nautical chart splayed across the front: \u2018ch\u00e4rt, n: a nautical map that shows you what you just hit,\u2019\u201d Glang explains. \u201cAs creative as that is, a boating accident can kill. Keeping a nautical chart on hand \u2013 before you hit something \u2013 can save lives.\u201d<br \/>\nThe beta test for MyNOAACharts will end on Labor Day, September 2, 2013. Coast Survey will then evaluate usage and user feedback, which will be pivotal in any decision to move forward.<br \/>\n\u201cExpanding the app across a multitude of platforms, ensuring easy accessibility to over a thousand charts and nearly 5,000 pages of U.S. Coast Pilot, will take considerable resources,\u201d Glang notes. \u201cWe truly want users to <a title=\"Comments\" href=\"http:\/\/ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov\/idrs\/inquiry.aspx?frompage=ContactUs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">let us know<\/a> if the app meets their needs.\u201d<br \/>\nBoaters who don\u2019t have an Android tablet shouldn\u2019t despair. The Office of Coast Survey provides free <a title=\"BookletCharts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov\/staff\/BookletChart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BookletCharts<\/a>, which are 8 \u00bd\u201d x 11\u201d PDF versions of NOAA nautical charts that can be downloaded and printed at home.
