Hello Coast Survey,

One of the things that I have been most excited about during my first months as deputy hydrographer is the opportunity to support and participate in the full spectrum of Coast Survey’s mission. This position complements the internal operations responsibilities of the deputy director with an externally facing one that focuses on three principal areas: international, interagency, and legislative engagement.

I must admit that the breadth and reach of Coast Survey’s external activities is awe inspiring and intimidating at the same time. During my short tenure, I have already had the privilege of representing Coast Survey in a number of external engagements as a participant, the Director’s representative, chairman, and frequently as a student. Some of the early highlights for me include a perfectly run Hydrographic Services Review Panel (HSRP) with an engaged professional membership, a U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) Data Interoperability Roundtable, the Interagency Working Group on Ocean and Coastal Mapping (IWG OCM), and many international engagements with hydrographic offices around the world from the Baltic to Singapore and many in between. Each of these activities support or capitalize on the work that you do, ocean mapping, nautical charting, modeling, information technology and more. I am fortunate to have joined an extremely versatile group of people on the staff and have started working with them on plans to explain, formalize, and hopefully improve our external engagements moving forward.
