Hello everyone,

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Rear Admiral Richard “Rick” Brennan, Director of the Office of Coast Survey. A loyal and deeply empathetic leader, Rick served the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps and nautical charting community for nearly three decades. Rick will be remembered for his passion for the NOAA and Coast Survey missions, as a role model for countless employees, a talented and knowledgeable hydrographer, and a man dedicated to family and friendship.

Coast Survey’s leadership team is here to support you, and we encourage you to reach out if you want to talk. Additionally, the Employee Assistance Program is available with trained counselors 24/7 at 800-222-0364. Part of Rick’s philosophy as Coast Survey Director was to take care of yourself and to take care of your teammates – please try to be kind to each other and yourselves during this difficult time.

I am serving as Coast Survey’s Acting Director in the interim, as the National Ocean Service and the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations leadership determine the process and timeline for selecting a new Director. I will pass along that information as it becomes available. In the meantime, we will honor Rick’s legacy by advancing the priorities he established. I appreciate the hard work and dedication of all Coast Survey during this challenging time.

Katie Ries
Deputy Director, Office of Coast Survey
