Coast Survey completes hydrographic survey response to Hurricane Delta
NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson Launch 2904 surveying the
Bar Channel, Calcasieu, Louisiana Approach.
Coast Survey's
navigation response teams (NRT) completed hydrographic surveys in areas affected by Hurricane Delta at the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). These areas included portions of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway adjacent to the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Louisiana. With lessons learned from the response to Hurricane Laura — the first major hurricane of the 2020 season and the first hurricane response during a pandemic — the NRTs successfully collected and processed data in separate locations. Thank you to
Lt. j.g. Collin Walker for serving as the data runner between locations as well as NRT-Stennis (
Lt. John Kidd,
Josh Bergeron,
Alex Ligon) and processing team (
Lt. j.g. Levano augmenting from NRT-Seattle and
Dan Jacobs augmenting from NRT-Galveston), and NRT-Fernandina Beach (
James Kirkpatrick,
Justin Collet,
Howie Myers) and processing team (
Lt. j.g. Patrick Lawler and
Rob Mowrey both augmenting from
Bay Hydro II).
NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson also supported the response effort by surveying the entrance to the channel and finding a sunken barge below the surface. All survey data was processed and delivered to the USACE to ensure timely reopening of waterways. All of this coordination could not be done without the support of navigation managers (
Tim Osborn,
Quentin Stubbs, and
Lou Licate) and headquarters leadership and staff (
Julia Powell,
Matt Kroll,
Cmdr. Jay Lominicky,
Chris Hare,
Mike Annis,
Mike Davidson,
Martha Herzog,
Corey Allen,
Capt. Rick Brennan, and
Vanessa Russell). For more information on contact

NOAA hosts second annual precision marine navigation stakeholder workshop
Julia Powell, John Kelley, Jason Greenlaw, and Christine
Burns provide an overview of the Precision Marine Navigation
program.
On September 30 and October 1 more than 200 users from across the maritime navigation community came together for a virtual workshop on precision marine navigation. The workshop included sessions geared toward different user groups including software developers, end users such as pilots, and to partners across the federal government. The workshop featured presentations on the new processing and dissemination system from NOAA data providers, from partners across government agencies, and in industry. These presentations were followed up by discussion sessions where attendees provided NOAA with feedback on the program developments and future direction. This year’s workshop reaffirmed NOAA’s goals for the Precision Marine Navigation program and highlighted priority areas for our users and partners. In the coming weeks, we will share recordings of the presentations, the images from the graphic illustrator, and the workshop report on the
workshop webpage. For more information on contact

Navigation Response Team Activities
NRT-Stennis and NRT-Fernandina Beach, with augmentors from NRT-Seattle, NRT-Galveston and Bay Hydro II, completed work in the Calcasieu Ship Channel and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, and checked on CO-OPS equipment. This is the same location they worked during the Hurricane Laura response.
NRT- New London is working on a project in Long Island Sound.
