From crowd sourced data to the future of E-Navigation, the panel will examine how mariners use NOAA’s navigational, positioning, and coastal data, products and tools. This panel will explore the “next generation” of navigation service solutions for decision support at all levels. Moderator: Admiral Shepard M. Smith
Wednesday, April 19, 2017, 8:30AM – 12 noon 9:45 AM – 11:45 AM Partnerships for Pacific Northwest – on and off the Chart: The Pacific Northwest region faces unique management challenges for coastal communities dependent on food, energy, recreation, and seaborne commerce. All mapping, charting, and transportation activities and infrastructure are founded on a reliable, accurate national coordinate system which rely on the value and use of geodetic and tidal datums for marine boundaries. NOS is solely responsible for providing that system which provides more than $2.4 billion in potential annual benefits to the U.S. economy. NOS provides the nation's network of coastal tide and water level sensors, provides long term sea level trends, current predictions, and real-time current information at many of our Nation's Ports. NOS provides data and tools that enable businesses and coastal communities to better plan for and mitigate risk from changing conditions. This panel will examine the value and use of datums, circulation models, and navigation tools, and discuss potential measures to improve partnerships and management. Stakeholders will note how they use NOS’s data, tools, and services and their suggestions or improvements. Moderator: Captain John Veentjer, Executive Director, Marine Exchange of Puget Sound, and Chair, Puget Sound, Harbor Safety Committee
