  1. This picture, with the snow-capped mountains and the pine trees, makes me think of my late grandfather, Capt. J.C. Bose, USC&GS, who captained USC&GS Surveyor (1917) during World War II in Alaska. My late mother and her mother spent some time in Alaska during the war, as well.
    The Coast Survey’s (and predecessors) status as the sixth uniformed military service during times of war is routinely overlooked. My grandfather said that he hated having the .50 gun on the bow, because he was afraid that Japanese submarines would attack just based on sighting the gun.
